POSITION TITLE: (SS14) District Interpreter/Translator & Administrative Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Communications

WORK DAYS: 240 days

REPORTS TO: Director of Communications

PAY SCALE: CO Level 2

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma, Bachelor’s degree preferred, and/or Native Speaker
  • Acceptable criminal background check
  • Translator Certification preferred
  • Experience working in an educational setting and/or a service-oriented agency that works with language-minority families
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English and a second language (for RCS = Spanish)
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public

 

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Facilitate oral communication between language minority families  and district staff by interpreting telephone conversations, conference calls, in-person conversations, etc., during school hours, for parent/teacher conferences, after-school activities, including parent trainings, IEP & 504 meetings, and other school functions
  • Maintains a shared electronic calendar with the supervisor of all scheduled meetings across the district
  • Translates school-home communications and system-wide documents from English to the target language as needed
  • Uses technology appropriately to format, translate, save, and retrieve work
  • Maintains an electronic calendar and works with electronic documentation
  • Reviews and evaluates documents as needed; Clarifies content and terminology
  • Edits the work of other translators and responds to editing suggestions of others
  • Assumes responsibility for the quality of translation work submitted by reviewing, editing, and revising own work, and the quality of interpretation by clarifying ideas and messages to assist with understanding
  • Learns new translations
  • Attends professional trainings, meetings, or conferences as requested by the immediate supervisor
  • Maintains cultural sensitivity when relaying concepts and ideas between languages
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Interacts and develops working relationships with professionals, staff, students, and their families using positive interpersonal, oral, and written communication in English and a second language
  • Maintains confidentiality and abides by federal, state, and local board policies
  • Serves as an administrative assistant and assistant in the communication department
  • Performs all other job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
